Natural Slate is particularly suitable as a roofing material as it has a low tendency to absorb water, making it very resistant to frost damage and breakage due to freezing. Slate roof tiles are usually fixed using either nail fixing, or the hook fixing method. Roofing features such as valleys and domes are easier to create using slate, since narrow tiles can be used. Slate is largely grey in colour; however there are a lot of quarries that offer alternatives. For example slate from North Wales can be found in many shades of grey from pale to dark and may also be purple, green or cyan. Click on the images below to view more examples in our gallery below.

Fibre-cement slates are one of the most widely used pitched roof covering in Northern Ireland. Fitted in the correct manner they should easily surpass the manufacturer's warranty by a good number of years. The slates are reasonably priced and can be fitted quicker than natural slate, thus making fibre-cement slates an all-round inexpensive alternative to natural slate. We can confidently say that in recent years we have used fibre-cement slates more than any other pitched roof covering.
